The best helicopter tour in NYC: all 12 flights, ranked honestly

Three things, and only three, and the first one is almost never mentioned in a listing.

Where it lifts off, because that sets the route. Sightseeing flights that depart from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at Pier 6 fly water routes: down the East River, out into the Upper Bay past the Statue of Liberty, then north up the Hudson with the island on your right. They do not cross over Manhattan. Operators on the New Jersey side fly a different pattern and their routes go over the island itself, which is the only way to look straight down at Central Park. Neither is better. They are different cities, and knowing which one you want is most of the decision.

What the extra minutes buy is distance: fifteen minutes turns at Midtown, twenty-five reaches the George Washington Bridge or crosses the island, and thirty to forty-five from Westchester comes down the Hudson past the Palisades first.

First time in New York, one flight, sensible budget. Take the Manhattan sightseeing loop at $256. The first thirty seconds are the same on every flight here and they are the thirty seconds everybody remembers: the pad drops away, the bridges line up to the north, and Lower Manhattan stands up all at once beside you. Seven and a half thousand people have rated that 4.8. It lifts off twenty minutes from Midtown, which means no morning lost to a transfer.

You want to see Central Park and the grid from directly above. Book the New Jersey departure at $305. This is the one genuine difference on this page: flights from the Manhattan heliport follow water routes around the island, and only the New Jersey operators cross it. Allow about an hour each way to reach the pad and understand that you are paying two hours of your day for a view you cannot get any other way.

You are choosing between day and night. The night flight at $259 is twenty-five minutes over a city lit from the inside, and it is the only night listing here with real review numbers: 122 at 4.8. If you can only do one and the sky is clear, the sensible answer is neither extreme — book the last slot before sunset and get the gold light on the towers and the first windows coming on in the same flight.

It is an anniversary, a birthday or a proposal. The private cabin for two at $937 is the best-evidenced private flight on this page: 295 reviews at 4.9. If it is specifically a proposal, the flight built for it at $3,558 exists because the crew knowing what is coming is the entire difference between a proposal that works and one that happens next to four strangers.

You are four people travelling together. Look at the charter for two to six at $1,610 before you buy four separate seats. Split four ways it is about $403 each, which is less per head than the couples flight and barely more than the longest shared seat — for the whole aircraft.

You have flown as a passenger before and want something else. The flight lesson at $663 puts you in the left seat with an instructor for ninety minutes including the briefing. It is not a sightseeing flight with better views; it is a lesson that happens to have New York outside the window, and the hours count toward a licence.
